Different Classes of Safety Vests
Reflective jackets or safety vests are used to protect workers from oncoming traffic on roadside construction sites by making the wearer more visible. There are three classes of reflective clothing. The class required by law to be worn is based on the work site.
Class 1 reflective clothing is required when the wearer will be working in proximity to automobile or equipment traffic traveling at speeds that do not exceed 25 miles per hour. This type of safety vest is ideal for someone working in a warehouse where equipment like forklifts will be in operation. It would also be worn by someone working in a parking garage or an individual retrieving shopping carts from a parking lot.
Class 2 safety vests provide greater visibility to oncoming traffic. This class of reflective clothing is required to be worn when workers are working adjacent to traffic traveling at speeds in excess of 25 miles per hour but below 50 miles per hour. A highway construction worker would want to wear this, as would school crossing guards, railway workers, and survey crews.
A class 3 safety vest or jacket is worn when the worker will be exposed to traffic traveling in excess of 50 miles per hour and/or have reduced sight distances. Again, a highway construction worker would be an example of someone making use of this class of reflective clothing.
Before heading out to the job site, make sure you are properly protected by choosing the appropriate class of reflective clothing.
